Rainbow Snippet for 7-16-2016

Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, bloggers, and readers to gather once a week and share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).   Check out all the other awesome snippets by clicking on the picture above.

Posting from Onyx Sun, a science fiction novel that is currently in revision and which I’m hoping to publish next month.  (Those of you who participate in Sunday Snippets may remember parts of this.)

Taliya has just found out that her mother sold her lover (Luzita) into slavery.

There may or may not be some creative punctuation involved in the following text.

Taliya stared at her, stunned, her mind numb even as her thoughts whirled and spun out of control.

“She didn’t have to pay room and board.  Grandmother–”

“Your grandmother is dead.”  Maureena’s voice was cold. “This House now operates under my rules.”  Maureena’s smile was colder than her voice. “And under my rules, everyone pulls their own weight.  I don’t believe in charity.”

“You sold her…”  Disbelief still softened Taliya’s voice.  “You sold Luzita…”

“You’ll find someone else.  Someone more suitable.”

  1. Ooo, nothing as scary as a mother that thinks she knows best, your lover isn’t it, and she’s in a position to do something about it! Not to mention it’s a very nasty something!

  2. Ohh that’s terrible! I hope she’ll be able to bring her back.

  3. Jana Denardo

I am so looking forward to her mother’s comeuppance.

  4. I’m about to cry for Taliya and Luzita. Maureena is a real piece of work!

Oh, evil woman! I hope Maureena gets what she deserves and that Taliya and Luzita find each other again.

  6. Alexa Milne

    Harsh mother is harsh.

Wow. Maureena is not about to win any Mother of the Year awards, is she? “I don’t believe in charity” is such a horrible thing to say about a servant.

  8. Somehow i don’t think Taliya has been inspired to search for someone more suitable. Bad move, mom!

  9. I still hate this bitch. Just had to drop that in. 😛

  10. *shudders* Horrible. Taliya’s not going to put up with this, I hope?
