Taliya has bought a used space ship, had a few (mis)adventures with it, and has gone to look up an old friend from school for help. Josul has been doing some work on Taliya’s ship. (The “ghost” refers to the feelings that Taliya gets from the ship, that it is alive and aware.)
“All set,” Josul said, stretching. The first thing he had done was run sweep for tracking bugs and had found none, much to Taliya’s relief, and now he had finished reconfiguring her identification array. He glanced around the cockpit and frowned. “You’re flying alone?”
“Yes, why?” Briefly she wondered if he could feel the ghost too.
He shook his head. “You shouldn’t be. A ship this size needs at least two to crew it properly.” He looked at her sharply. “You know that.”
“Yes, I know that. But it can be handled by one, and I wasn’t sure I could afford to hire anyone. And now I’m pretty sure I can’t.”
“What do you mean?”
