Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, bloggers, and readers to gather once a week and share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!). Taliya has bought a used space ship, had a few (mis)adventures with it, and has gone to look up an old friend from school for help. This picks up from last week’s snippet, in which Taliya filled Josul in on what’s been happening since she bought the ship, and now they’re discussing getting her ship a new identity.
“What about a name for the ship?”
She shook her head. “I have no idea. That’s why I stuck with Vain Glory.”
“How about the Black Hole, since we’re sort of dropping you into one?”
She wrinkled her nose.
“Yeah, I didn’t like it all that much, either.”
They kicked some ideas around and finally came up with Onyx Sun, a private joke between the two of them, an acknowledgment of the black hole that Taliya was being dumped into.
“All right,” Josul said as he signaled for the waitress. “I’ll be at your ship first thing in the morning to do the on board work.” He turned off the muting device and slipped it into a pocket.
“Thanks, Josul.” Taliya smiled, suddenly feeling as if a huge weight had been lifted from her. “I really appreciate it, especially on such short notice.”
“It’s not like you had any way to reach me ahead of time, at least, not safely.”
“Speaking of… Will I be?”
He waved off her concern. “Absolutely. No one will bother you or your ship here.” He grinned. “You’re not really in tame space anymore, Taliya. Oh, they say we are, but we aren’t. The Galactic Enforcement Agency doesn’t poke their nose into this system – they barely even poke into this sector.”
