.

I’m posting from my current writing WiP, Song and Shadow, a prequel to Song and Sword. It’s a rough draft and I still don’t have an actual outline for it so it’s going to be a fun ride.

Picking up from last week’s snippet.

“Princes don’t have friends.”

“Why not?”

“Because friends… Friends are equals, and no one treats me like one. They are either busy bowing and scraping and catering to me or else they are like the palace guard and barely tolerate my presence.” He shook his head. “I wish you could help me, but I fear I do not know how to pay the price. I have no idea what friendship really is, let alone what it means.”

“Then perhaps I can help you with that as well, Prince Hierik.”

“Why?”

“Why?” Pashevel’s response was gentle, curious.

“Why would you want to help me? And be my friend? What favor do you want from it later?”

“Only friendship, Your Highness. Only friendship.”

  1. Yes – the words of a true friend.

  2. “I have no idea what friendship really is, let alone what it means.”
    I really feel that line.
I’m enjoying the exchange between these characters.

  3. You can really see how hard it is for the prince to trust, and that there might be some challenges ahead. Its a great set up both for the evolution of the relationship and for the conflict inherent in that growth.

  4. The poor prince certainly seems to have good cause to be suspicious. I enjoyed their conversation, great snippet!

  5. Sad but true. How would he recognize a friend or know the truth of the relationship? I feel his pain.

  6. Lesson one: That’s how friendship works. I hope the prince catches on soon. :-)

  7. Hopefully, the prince will learn what friendship is truly about.

  8. Lovely snippet, so powerful and sad at the same time. I hope he’ll be able to learn and find true friendship. It’s worth more than any money in the world ;-)
