I decided to skip way ahead in the story. (Onyx Sun, still in perpetual revisions).
Taliya has bought a used space ship, had a few (mis)adventures with it, and has gone to look up an old friend from school for help.
Her lack of identification signal got her met with suspicion by the Station Master’s office on Lansigan Prime, but they accepted her explanation of electrical problems without comment. This was, after all, the border between tame space and wild space, and no one asked questions – or looked too closely at the answers.
She sealed the ship and went in search of a public comm station, and a few minutes later Josul answered her call.
“Wha– Taliya?” Confusion showed in his green eyes but as he brushed black bangs in need of a trim out of his eyes he smiled. “Where are you?”
“Lansigan Prime. Am I interrupting something?”
“Nothing important. What are you doing here and where here are you?”
She laughed. “I’m at the station – I just set down an hour or so ago.” She took a deep breath. “Can we meet for lunch somewhere?”
He studied her for a moment. “Yeah. Let me pick you up.”
No questions, she thought as she left the booth. He knows something is wrong.
