Sunday Snippet, January 10, 2021

.

I’m posting from my current writing WiP, Song and Shadow, a prequel to Song and Sword. It’s a rough draft and I still don’t have an actual outline for it so it’s going to be a fun ride.

Picking up from last week’s snippet. “He” is Pashevel.

“Quiet in here tonight,” he remarked as the serving girl brought him another drink.

“Always is when they’re here,” she replied, nodding her head toward a group of men in uniform.

“Who are they?” He had noticed them – there was very little that he didn’t notice – but he was unfamiliar with the insignia they wore.

“Royal Guard.”

“Trouble?”

She shook her head. “Everyone’s just afraid of saying the wrong thing, that’s all. They make people uncomfortable – no one knows quite what to say to them or around them.”

“Maybe I should see if I can lighten the mood a bit,” he suggested, nodding toward the raised platform that served as a stage.

She smiled. “It would certainly brighten my mood.”

He laughed and raised his tankard in a toast to her before rising and making his way to the stage.
