My Camp NaNoWriMo project this month is yet another attempt to get a handle on Book Two of The Other Mages trilogy. (Yes, I know I’ve tried to finish this in other Camp sessions, but this time I’ve had an “ah-ha!” moment on how to fix a plot issue so I actually have hope…
Character introduction:
Trebor is an Empath. D’Laron is his best friend and a Healer.
This follows from last week.
The hour passed in a whirl of emotions for Trebor and he was more relieved than the students when D’Laron released the class. He watched as Katheri hesitated, then she left the room and he felt the tension flow out of him, leaving him drained and tired. He looked up to see D’Laron looking at him in concern, and he managed a smile.
“I sincerely hope you have a bottle of brandy or something in your office,” Trebor said, wearily pushing himself up from his seat. “We’re both going to need it.”
D’Laron raised an eyebrow but said nothing until they were both back in his office with a tumbler of brandy.
“Well?”
Trebor sighed and ran a hand over his face. “Where do you want me to start?”
“Does she have Potential? I thought I caught a flicker when I looked, but had to focus on teaching…”
Trebor nodded. “It’s there, barely. It’s… it’s like it’s been extinguished. It’s dying. We need to reach her before it does.” He paused, taking a deep breath. “And there’s more.” He took a sip of brandy as he waited for D’Laron to absorb what he’d said so far.
“More?” D’Laron prompted at last.
“She knows.”
“Knows?”
So what is it she knows? The line from the old radio series comes to mind: “Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of men? The Shadow knows!”
Sometimes the thing that makes or breaks a person is someone believing in them and encouraging them. It sounds like Trebor may be able to do this for Katheri.
Very cool and of course I’m on the edge of my seat waiting to see what she knows…really enjoying this story! Great excerpt….
An intriguing end!
Intriguing indeed. I wonder what she knows.
