Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, bloggers, and readers to gather once a week and share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!). My Camp NaNoWriMo project this month is yet another attempt to get a handle on Book Two of The Other Mages trilogy. (Yes, I know I’ve tried to finish this in other Camp sessions, but this time I’ve had an “ah-ha!” moment on how to fix a plot issue so I actually have hope…
Trebor is an Empath. D’Laron is his best friend and a Healer. Luthen is… Well, an Elder in their tradition, and a mentor, especially to Trebor. Katheri is also an Empath, and Trebor and D’Laron are her Sajen – her trainers/mentors.
Sidden is a Healer and Empath, more experienced than Trebor or D’Laron.
This follows from last week:
Drawing in a deep breath of the crisp air, he [Trebor] took a few steps away from the house and looked up at the sky just as snow started to fall, and suddenly found himself tackled to the ground.
“Not going to say hello to an old friend?”
The voice was familiar but as Trebor reached for his emotional field he found nothing.
“Sid?” He rolled to his feet and turned slowly, confusion in every line of his face and body and flooding his emotional field.
Laughing, Sidden extended his arms and dropped the shields that he had hidden his emotions behind.
“Sid!” Trebor found himself wrapped in a tight embrace, surrounded by emotion as much as arms. “I’ve missed you.”
He was surprised to find that his voice was choked with emotion and he felt his shields slipping, and he let them, let Sidden feel how welcome he was, and how glad he was to have him there. Vaguely he was aware that he was crying and he let the tears flow.
Sidden let Trebor’s emotions flow to him. He could feel a deep hunger within his friend and he tightened his arms around him.
“I’m glad you feel that way,” Sidden told him, his voice a warm murmur. ‘I’ve missed you too and I might be staying awhile if that’s all right.”

Awww, so sweet! <3
Aww! I wasn’t sure what to expect after that tackle. This was a sweet outcome! 💖
Feeling other so deeply would be both a gift and curse at once.
