Picking up from last week.
“And you couldn’t have called?” Amusement tinged her voice as she took his coat and hung it up.
“I could have,” he admitted, glancing toward the kitchen.
“I’m fine,” she laughed. Her voice grew darker, softer. “They were kicked out of their homes. They’re half frozen and more than half starved.”
He nodded. “I worry.”
“I know. And I’m sorry you had to come all the way out here for nothing.”
“It’s not for nothing.” He sighed. “He’s lodged a complaint that you’re running a homeless shelter without a license and he’s really going to push for them to investigate and won’t stop until they do.”
“I’m not running a homeless shelter.”
“The report says that you were seen admitting two young males into the building.”
“I did,” she replied calmly. “This is my home. I do believe I have the right to have guests in it? Overnight if I wish? Longer if I want?”
Bran sighed. “You’re risking too much, Kunda,” he said softly.
