Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, bloggers, and readers to gather once a week and share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!). Check out all the other awesome snippets by clicking on the picture above.
Picking up a few lines from last week’s snippet from a neglected WiP. The boys have been stranded on a deserted street in a winter storm, turned away by a church shelter because they’re gay. They’ve been rescued by a woman across the street who has bustled them off to a shower. Clean, warm, and dry, Tommy and Alex have followed their noses to the kitchen. This is unedited, so in the words of our fearless leader, “Squint.”
Skipping a few lines from last week. Alex has told Kamrin that he and Tommy were heading for a city [indecisive writer doesn’t know which one] in the hopes that it would be better than the small town they grew up in.
“Big city, small town. It only matters to small minds and you’ll find those everywhere.” She tilted her head as she looked at Tommy. “Are you all right?” she asked. “You seem flushed.”
“I’m fine.”
She shook her head. “Your breathing isn’t right.”
“He’s been sick,” Alex said. “But we can’t go to a hospital or clinic because they’ll want insurance or a way to pay.”
“Not necessarily.” She rose and moved around the table to crouch down beside Tommy. “What’s wrong?”
“I’m coughing some, that’s all.”
“And his chest hurts when he takes a deep breath and that’s what makes him cough,” Alex said.
She nodded and rose.”I have something that will help until we can get you to a doctor. Meanwhile, eat. There’s lots more where that came from.” She frowned slightly.”When is the last time you two had a good meal?”
