I’m still posting from Onyx Sun, a science fiction novel that is currently in revision. The revisions are turning out to be more complex than originally expected so the release date is, um, to be determined. (I’ve given up trying to predict one, but I have at least one more round of revisions after the current one.)
I’m skipping ahead just a few paragraphs from last week. (This part is still in revision so squint because I haven’t gotten to it yet.)
Taliya had no trouble finding the slaver; he was the only merchant without a horde of customers. People on the fringe, she had learned, valued freedom, and along with that they abhorred slavery.
“Never thought you’d be the type to buy a slave.”
The voice startled her and she turned, coming face to face with Soraine, the captain of The StarFlame. The two of them had a friendly rivalry and a grudging respect for one another, and Soraine was someone that she could consider a friend.
“I’m not,” she said. “At least, not under normal circumstances.” She sighed. “I’m looking for one in particular, a former lover. If I find her I will buy her and free her.”
A slow grin crossed Soraine’s face. “I knew I liked you,” she said. “Buying a slave just to free her – that is priceless.” Soraine reached into a pocket on her belt and handed Taliya a voucher. “Let me help with it.”
I’m already liking Soraine…
Soraine is going to get her own novel one of these days…
Nice! Now Taliya just has to FIND her. :)
Yay to both of them! 💗
Oh, I really like this! Friendly rivalries are fun. I love here how you can tell that underneath whatever they show each other on the surface, there’s genuine respect and care underneath it.
Good to see her getting some support! :)
I think I’d be a bit like that about it too – it’s kind of…well, the slave owner still gets money out of it, but there’s not much else she can do, really. Apart from finding Luzita…soon? ;)
Hmmm Soraine looks interesting too. I liked this exchange.
