Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, bloggers, and readers to gather once a week and share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).   Check out all the other awesome snippets by clicking on the picture above.

I’m still posting from Onyx Sun, a science fiction novel that is currently in revision. The revisions are turning out to be more complex than originally expected so the release date is, um, to be determined. (I’ve given up trying to predict one, but now that NaNoWriMo is over I’m going to be diving back into work on it.)

Picking up from last week.

“I have to tell you,” she said quietly, “that traveling with me could be dangerous.  There has been a miscommunication and there are some who would probably be happy to see me dead and who won’t care who goes with me.  But as soon as I can safely hire someone, I promise you that I will take you to whatever planet you wish and will free you, and give you back pay for your time spent on my ship.”

He tilted his head curiously.

“I don’t like slavery, Ayess.  In fact, I hate it.  Offering freedom is the only way I can bring myself to do this.”  She searched his gaze.  “I won’t ask anyone to come with me without knowing the risk.”

  1. Ayess is in a tight spot, but apparently it could be worse!

  2. I need to check back, but “miscommunication” is putting it a little mildly, isn’t it?

This is probably me reading waaaaay too much into this, but I like it–has the feel of “consent isn’t just about intimacy, it’s also about what we ask in our friendships/working relationships.”

    Really love this story…:)

  5. Jana Denardo

I like her more and more each snippet

  6. This is awesome. I like that Ayess is so honest with him. Based on last week’s snippet, he really needs that. :)
