Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, bloggers, and readers to gather once a week and share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).   Check out all the other awesome snippets by clicking on the picture above.

I’m still posting from Onyx Sun, a science fiction novel that is currently in revision. The revisions are turning out to be more complex than originally expected so the release date is, um, to be determined. (I’ve given up trying to predict one.)

Picking up from last week.  Having been fired on by an unknown ship, Taliya had discovered some oddities about her own ship, and is doing some research into its past.

The ship had belonged to one Derring Hessen, and had been confiscated following his arrest in the Arescar Sector for smuggling marjicia root.

Taliya frowned. Marjicia root was only found in the swamp lands of Moraze Prime, which made it a highly lucrative cargo.  It was also highly hallucinogenic and illegal enough to carry the death penalty if you were caught with it.  The problem was, Moraze Prime was a forbidden planet – and was nowhere near Arescar Sector.

He could have been taking it to the Arescar Sector to sell, except for one thing: the Arescar Sector was uninhabited.  There were no planets there capable of supporting life: the whole area was littered with asteroids and the dead moons of deader planets. There wasn’t even anything there worth terra-forming and the Galactic Rule Enforcement Agency had declared the entire area off-limits, stating that it was too dangerous of an area to navigate.

Something wasn’t adding up.
