Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, bloggers, and readers to gather once a week and share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).   Check out all the other awesome snippets by clicking on the picture above.

I’m still posting from Onyx Sun, a science fiction novel that is currently in revision. The revisions are turning out to be more complex than originally expected so the release date is, um, to be determined. (I’ve given up trying to predict one.)

Picking up from two weeks ago.  Taliya asked the Pendelia Four Planetary Investigations agents how much her mother had paid them to detain her.

“You are not being detained, Miss Swann,” Agent Ridi said.  “You’re not a suspect. Everyone who has done business with them in the last six months is being questioned.”

He, she decided, was just doing his job.  Her words, however, had had an effect on his partner: there was a flash of guilt in his eyes and then anger, both quickly replaced by his usual emotionless expression.

“I don’t know what you want me to tell you,” she said.  “I knew nothing about it until just now.”

“Then you won’t mind coming with us to answer some questions,” Agent Capize said.

“Not without my attorney.”

“Attorney?  Feeling guilty?”

“I have nothing to hide,” Taliya replied, meeting his gaze steadily.  “But you seem to have already convicted me.”

“Not at all,” Agent Ridi said.  “We’re only trying to find the person responsible and we only want to question you about what you may have seen or heard while you were there.  Perhaps there was something that could help us, something that seemed insignificant at the time.”
