Sunday Snippet February 7, 2016

Book One of The Academy of the Accord is safely in the hands of a brave beta reader, so I’m going to post from Book Two this month.

Marsden is searching for an apprentice wizard who’s gone missing from the Wizard Guild House in Moinacheem while Vinadi is tied up in meetings. (This is set a few years after Book One.)

A quick motion caught his eye and he turned just as a slight, dark-haired figure detached itself from a shadowed alley and darted forward and snatched a skewer of chicken from the edge of a street vendor’s grill.

“Hey!  Get back here, you!”  But the boy had disappeared into the throngs of people and the man sent an impressive string of curses after him.  “Slimy wharf rats!” he muttered, angrily flipping another skewer so the meat wouldn’t burn.

“A problem, are they?”

He looked up, suddenly smiling at the customer in front of him.  “That one is.  Only hits any of us when we don’t have any help so we can’t go after him.”  He shook his head, saddened as he calmed down.  “Probably doesn’t have any parents.  Most of ‘em don’t.”

Marsden smiled and bought a skewer of chicken, then reconsidered and bought a second, dropping some extra coins. “To pay for the boy’s,” he said. “Do you have any idea where he lives?”

The man shrugged.  “Probably in the corner of a warehouse or an unused back room he’s broken into. If any of us knew where to find him, trust me, we would have hauled him to the guards by now.”
