Coincidence?

Like Gibbs from NCIS, I’m not quite sure I believe in coincidence, so maybe synchronicity is a better word, but…

As probably everyone who reads my blog already knows, I’ve been in a writing slump. There have been glimmers of hope, but nothing seems to be breaking me out of it and getting me into that feverish “must write and write and write and write” mode that keeps me up all night and gets me up early in the morning.

Well, it seems I’m not alone.  Two of the blogs that I follow have had posts about writer’s block this week.

Fictioner’s Net  is one and Ink Out Loud  is another.

So what is it with the sudden onslaught of wordlessness? Or at least, the pondering of wordlessness?

Summer doldrums? I know it’s been miserably hot up in my room these last three days and that makes it really hard for me to write. (I did get some more work done on my outline, though.)

Retrograde Mercury?  I know my computer has been sluggish and unresponsive, which makes it hard to write.  I get frustrated and yell at it and scare my rats.

Whatever it is, I need to get over it.  I think I might have to resort to Write Or Die to get myself moving…

    Blame it on the rain…

Seriously though, I think (in my case), it’s the fact that I didn’t really want to start anything new before July, so that I’d have plenty to work on for Camp NaNoWriMo. Until this past week (maybe two weeks), I’ve also been in a slump for this reason. I haven’t wanted to write, and I haven’t wanted to edit. The lack of editing is due to not wanting to seriously edit a sequel when the first book isn’t quite ready. So, I’m just gonna blame it on the rain… Or, in our area, lack thereof (until last night of course).

    • Blaming it on the rain works, although I rather like Nick’s theory that it’s aliens.

I can completely sympathize with the not wanting to edit a sequel when the first book isn’t done — you just KNOW there will be changes stemming from that first book…

Rain? Aliens? Hmmm… Think I’ll have to blame aliens too this time. That’s exactly why I don’t want to work on the sequel yet. *sigh* Eventually…

  3. To compound it, I’ve had two people message me on Twitter about my post telling me they were nodding along (or otherwise found themselves in agreement) with that same thing. It could be seasonal, though in my case (and those that messaged me), it would be due to being in the thick of winter.

It has been getting better since I started trying little tangents, and part of it must be because the stage I’m at doesn’t feel a lot like writing, even if it probably is and I’ve just psyched myself out of thinking it is. Words are coming, albeit slowly, but the process is empty and joyless…

But then it isn’t. When I actually get through a scene or come up with some new way for it to look, it’s a fantastic feeling, but there is definitely some mental fog here, with the people that contacted me, and it seems many more around the world.

    Aliens. Got to be.

OMG! I just caught this blog while I was trolling your site. I am so in this slump too. I have three wips teetering on the edge of completion but keep jumping from one to another to “tweak” because my mind can’t seem to wrap around finishing any of them. @_@ I thought it was just me, but now that I know aliens are involved…
