Sunday Excerpt — April 6, 2014

More from Sanguine, a science fiction novel (still in progress) with elements of semi-paranormal M/M romance.

(I am done with beta readers, and Sanguine is in next-to-final-edit stage, so this is still a work in progress and the following lines may or may not have been hacked and recombined and creatively punctuated to fit into 10 sentences.)

Picking up from last week’s snippet:

Kaen shook his head sharply as he returned to himself, still in the grip of memories that he could not quite recall.   “Gregor?  What…?”  The memory of what had just happened faded into unreality, but Gregor was there, Gregor was real.

Gregor smiled and ran his fingers through Kaen’s hair again.  “It’s all right, Master, I understand and you will too – soon.”  He sighed and reluctantly pulled away.  “We had better get dressed  – it will not do for the decorators to find the ship’s captain strutting around naked.”

Kaen laughed and kissed him lightly.

“By the way,” Gregor asked as he pulled his shirt – a dark red turtleneck – on over his head, “how old are you, Master?”

“I don’t know.”  For a moment Kaen’s eyes were troubled. “I lost some memories as the result of a duel with another vampire.   I lost.  I lived, but I lost… everything…”

  1. Wow–nicely done–love the line about the decorators.

    • Thanks! (That’s actually Gregor poking fun at Kaen for an earlier comment about how it wouldn’t do for the decorators to find the first officer strutting around naked.)

  2. I feel his sadness and frustration that he can’t remember.

  3. I’m sure Gregor will be helping him remember. I really love the way Gregor takes the reins occasionally—it’s turning into a real partnership. 🙂

    • Ha! Kaen wants him as an equal partner — he does’t want a “yes man.” Gregor finally agrees to an unequal partnership in that Kaen always gets the last word. (Come to think of it, he does’t stick with that “last word” bit very well. LOL)

  4. oooh, that’s always a great tension building the memory loss… you know the memories are there, but can’t find them… this makes me soo want to know more 🙂

I really love that first sentence! Great job!

  6. Ah-ha, so that’s why the adorable Gregor knows more than his master! Nice reveal. 🙂

  7. Karen Michelle Nutt

Oh memory loss… I’m sure someone will gladly help him remember. 🙂 Nicely done!

How frustrating to lose one’s memories. Nice excerpt.

    • The interesting part (revealed later) is that Kaen lost so much that he didn’t even remember that he was missing anything. It wasn’t until Gregor showed up that he began to sense what he was missing.

  9. I suspect Gregor knows some thins Kaen has forgotten.

  10. Haunting last line. Nice job 🙂

  11. Gregor seems to have recover nicely, he is playing the stronger one of the two now.

  12. Gem

Ahhh…I think part of his lost past has been found. Can’t wait to find out if I’m right. 🙂
