Sunday Excerpt — November 3, 2013

More from Sanguine, a science fiction novel (still in progress) with elements of semi-paranormal M/M romance.

(This is still a work in progress and the following lines have been hacked and recombined and creatively punctuated to fit into 10 sentences – and I still went over a bit.)

Picking up from last week: Gregor has just signed on to work in maintenance on the newly refitted starship, Sanguine, and was made Maintenance Chief.   Captain Kaen Yblis sensed that there was something else on his mind and Gregor told him, “I know what you are.”

“Oh?  And what am I?”  Kaen knew that there were vast rumors about him, and he had heard them all. Most of them were wildly untrue: a few brushed against one truth or another, but none of them even came close to the reality of what he was.

“You’re a vampire.”

“That’s a new one,” Kaen said.  “No one believes in vampires anymore.”

“I do.  The old tales — the old ways — have been kept alive in my family.”

“You say I am a vampire,” Kaen said after a long silence, “yet you do not fear me?”

“Why should I?” Gregor asked, holding Kaen’s gaze steadily, a feat few men were able to accomplish. “I believe in vampires, not fairy tales.”

Kaen laughed.  “So, Mr. I-believe-in-vampires-not-fairy-tales, what do you intend to do?”

In answer, Gregor reached inside his belt and withdrew a small golden dagger. “Do you recognize this?”
